About The Trust
Every child deserves to live in a safe environment
Founded in January 2017 the Bahati Trust for orphans in Tanzania is working hard with the help of donors to improve the lives of children living in orphanages in Dar es Salaam. Our work is dedicated to funding, planning and delivering change. The charity aims to provide the children with equipment, services and other items required to meet their needs for care, education, health and general welfare.
Our Causes
The Bahati Trust for Orphans in Tanzania works tirelessly to provide quality, long-term solutions for a number of pressing issues affecting the children. We aim to provide better and safer conditions for the children by assisting with much needed building improvements to make their day to day environment more tolerable. We are also sponsoring children for nursery, school and vocational courses. This means they will be able to support themselves in the future and thereby breaking the poverty cycle.

Improving Sanitaton
Prevention of disease
One of the main reasons The Bahati Trust for Orphans in Tanzania was founded was to improve on the dire conditions in which the children live. Most orphanages in Dar es Salaam are over crowded and in extremely poor condition. More often than not 60+ children are sharing one single toilet and one cubicle for washing. Add to this food and other waste being disposed of in areas where the children play, rest and eat and you understand how disease is so easily spread . One of the first projects the Bahati Trust undertook in March 2017 was to improve on these conditions by building adequate toilet and shower facilities at the Ijango orphanage in inner-city Dar es Salaam. In addition we improved on the current waste disposal systems by installing dedicated covered areas for rubbish. Improving Spaces
Dedicated spaces for rest, play and eating
One of the charity's aims is to optimise the limited space the children have available. Very seldom are there any indoor space available for the children so everything from eating, resting, playing, washing and doing homework is done in a very limited outdoor space. Often this space is further limited with staff parking their cars in this area and the sprawl of rubbish and other unwanted and discarded items. We would like to spend a portion of our resources on tackling this problem. We want to create safer play areas for the younger children as well as providing much needed cover from the sun and rain by adding shade sails or similar in the areas where the kids rest and work. Improving Education
Providing opportunities for life
One of our main goals is to ensure that the children are able to attend school and have the equipment they need like school bags, shoes, uniforms, pencils and exercise books. In the case of the older girls, lack of sanitary pads will also keep them off school on a regular basis. We would like to ensure that the children have comfortable shoes, and all the other necessities listed here that enable them to keep attending school.
The Trust also run a sponsorship programme and to date (August 2018) we are sponsoring 14 children ranging from nursery to vocational training courses.
The younger children that are sponsored are able to attend english speaking nurseries and schools where the level of teaching is excellent and where they have the opportunity to learn among other things computer skills, swimming and art. The children are also given a nutritional breakfast and lunch which sometimes is lacking at the orphanage centre.
Many of the older children who have left school (18 and over) have no chance of getting employment and will often spend their day at the orphanage helping the mama by looking after the youngest children. A diploma in a vocational subject will greatly improve their chances of gaining employment. It also gives them a chance to lead full and independent lives when they eventually leave the orphanage, hence breaking the poverty cycle. Contact us to learn more.

Time flies and it feels inconceivable that it is nine months ago we summited Kilimanjaro. We raised money for the filter required for the water project and although we are still some way off our target of $12,000 we made an inroad. The climb was followed by a visit to the Maasai village in Morogoro and it was a joy to see the water flowing from the taps. I also visited several of the previous projects in Dar es Salaam and got to meet up with many of my beautiful children, some of who we sponsor for school. I am pictured here with Bahati who is the boy who stole my heart all those years ago in 2016, and who the Trust is named after. He is now a delightful young man of 10 who still have a special place in my heart. All in all it was a truly successful visit and we are looking forward to going back later this year.

What a feeling! Although one of the hardest things we have ever done, it was also the most exhilarating. Climbing Kili seemed to be a natural thing to do as a fundraiser as the Bahati Trust is based in Tanzania. It has been at the back of our minds for a number of years but we finally bit the bullet last year and organised it. And some of us had to train for it! Five days up and 2 days down. The altitude sickness was a real killer and made a tough trek a lot more challenging, but standing on the top of Uhuru peak with the Bahati Trust banner was an experence we will never forget and well worth the pain. Thank you to everyone who sponsored us. We are forever grateful!
Trude visits Maasai water project

Trude finally got to see the water project we have been fund-raising for in the past year. The drilling was completed around the new year and the building work; including water tanks, pump house, water troughs for the livestock as well as fencing to protect the area was completed later in the year. The community have set up a committee to run the project, and it was decided that every person would have to pay a nominal sum to to collect water. That way the community itself can pay for maintenance as well as petrol for the generator. The women in the local village take it in turn to man the payment station. Trude spent an enjoyable afternoon with the children and the women of the village and got to see what a lifeline the water is to the community. When she left she felt very strongly that she wanted to come back and have the funding in place to install the water filter. Message from the Founder

In May last year I spoke about the registration of the Bahati Trust as an NGO in Tanzania and I am so happy to announce that it all has gone through. It was a lengthy process but we got there in the end and having charity status in Tanzania is really important to us. We can now do fund-raising in Tanzania and we will be able to take advantage of tax breaks benefiting charities. Being registered also means receiving a good level of public trust.
The founding members of the Bahati Foundation for underprivileged Children in Tanzania will be introduced in a subsequent newsletter.
Other exciting news is that we started drilling for water in the Maasai village near Morogoro in December and on the third day of drilling we hit water at 200 metres. We sent the water off for analysis and we are happy to announce that the water is of good quality which means only some treatments and filters will be required going forward. It is however, important to install a filter as it is not drinking quality yet and we want to provide the community with drinkable water straight from the source.
The money for the water project this far has come from various sources. Generous donations from individuals, sale of Bahati textiles in UK gift shops, proceeds from my photography exhibition 'into Africa", as well as a Christmas campaign selling gift certificates have all contributed to us reaching our goal. However, the main financial contribution came from Swiss charity Watoto Foundation CF who decided to give a sizeable chunk of funding to help us complete the first stage of the project.
The last stage of the project will start in September when we will be installing a water filter.
We are currently fundraising for this and a big thank you goes out to Ollie and Freddie Gardner, who together with myself are climbing Kilimanjaro in the end of August this year, and in that regard are fundraising for the water filter.
Already some donations have been coming in and we are hopeful that we will get enough to cover the cost of the filter.

Thank you to everyone who has helped us this far. We are incredibly grateful and so are the people of this impoverished community of approx 1500 Maasai people whose lives have changed for the better.
Clean Water for 1500 Maasai

The untold misery lack of clean water can bring is unimaginable to people in the Western world.
When waters run dry, people can't get enough to drink, wash, feed crops, nor look after their animals. Keeping cattle is the cornerstone of the Maasai's livelihood and water shortages can lead to severe economic decline. Add to this, inadequate sanitation, and you can see how lack of water can lead to deadly diarrhoeal diseases, including cholera and typhoid fever, and other water-borne illnesses.
The women in the Maasai community in Ubenazomozi, near Morogoro, where we have installed the new water well, have in the past spent up to 10 hours a day walking to the nearest clean water source for one bucket of water. The change the installation of the water well has made to their lives is immense. It has freed up their time to look after their children and to start small economic ventures like growing and selling vegetables, but most importantly it has reduced the occurrence of disease and the suffering it causes.
Trude is visiting the project in September this year and no doubt more news and pictures will follow after the visit.

Ollie and Freddie have been involved in the Bahati Trust from the beginning. They are the sons of the founder, Trude, and they are very popular visitors in the orphanage centres in Dar Es Salaam where they have spent time on several occasions.
In August this year they are climbing Kilimanjaro for charity and of course they will be supporting the Bahati Trust, a charity very close to their hearts.
All the money raised will go towards completing the water project by getting a filter. They are incredibly excited about helping and of course can't wait for the climb itself.

What’s New
Message from the Founder

2020 was a challenging year for most people and it seems that 2021 will continue in the same vein. But I feel people are now seeing a light at the end of the tunnel with vaccines being distributed widely in many parts of the world.
For the Bahati Trust it was also a very quiet year as donations dried up and fundraising events were cancelled. We are however very excited about the future. I spent a few weeks travelling in and around Tanzania in January and met some very inspirational people.
My most memorable time was spent in Maasai villages near Arusha and Morogoro were I lived with the Maasai and saw first hand the struggles they face with lack of sanitation and clean water. Untold misery and illness is caused by the lack of these human basic needs and I left my travels determined to help.
In other news we are now very close to getting the Bahati Trust registered as an NGO in Tanzania which means we can fundraise there as well as in the UK. Exciting news indeed.
Lastly, we are now taking part in a project started by woman's rights activist Zara Kay which is aimed at helping adolescent girls looking after their menstrual health. We are distributing reusable sanitary pads to poor girls and women throughout Tanzania. Read on to learn more about all these news.

Maasai Sanitation Project

Having recognised and experienced first hand the challenges facing many Maasai in and around Tanzania we have started fundraising for our Maasai water and sanitation project. Very soon our first postcards featuring photos of these beautiful people will be in production. We are planning on selling them in tourist locations where the travellers will have interacted with Maasai, so particularly Arusha, with all its national parks and Zanzibar. All the proceeds from the sale of the postcards will go directly to the Maasai project. We are also earmarking a substantial sum of our fundraising profit for this project.
Trude mentioned briefly in her message the misery lack of sanitation and clean water brings. Worldwide, lack of sanitation kills over 2 million annually just by diarrhoea, and most deaths are in children under the age of five. This is a statistic that feels shocking but if people don't have access to proper toilets they need to rely on solutions that are neither good for them, the communities they live in or the environment. But simply building toilets is not enough, as the sewerage system needs to be safe and environmentally sound. Hygiene education is also key. Hence there are real challenges to be met and we are cooperating with other organisations in our quest to make the best decisions possible. Our first sanitation project will take place in a remote Maasai village near Ubena in the Morogoro district of Tanzania. We will keep you updated with posts and pictures in social media.
NGO Registration in Tanzania

We are so excited that our registration papers are now in Government hands in Dodoma, the capital of Tanzania. We are hopeful that the registration will be completed by the end of this month or beginning of next. The most exciting aspect of the Trust being registered in Tanzania is that we can now have fundrasing events in Tanzania also and we will be able to approach companies based in Tanzania with donation requests. As you can imagine the plight of the poor in their own country will be more heartfelt to a Tanzanian than a European.

Menstrual Health for girls in Tanzania

1.8 billion girls and women of reproductive age worldwide menstruate each month as part of natural life. Yet millions of these girls lack basic access to menstruation services, products, and education about managing menstruating in a healthy way.
Gender inequality, discriminatory social norms and taboos, poverty and lack of basic access often hinder proper management of menstrual health.
Although there is a recent rise in awareness and understanding of this problem, and the strong correlation between menstrual health and hygiene and empowerment of girls, Tanzania still has a long road ahead to achieve access to MHM.
We are partnering with Faithless Hijabi and Veronica Njoroge to produce and distribute low-cost reusable sanitary pads among menstruating adolescent girls in Tanzania
The pads are made from locally sourced African pure cotton flannel fabric. They are foldable and easy to carry around in waterproof pouches.
The over-arching goal of the program is to create an affordable, environmentally friendly supply of sanitary pads by female led local entrepreneurs, ultimately achieving women's and girls' empowerment and gender equity.
We have already started the distribution and will keep you up to date on our progress on social media.

It has been a while since we got to update our website due to some technical problems with our website but I hope that you have been able to follow us on social media instead.
Since I last wrote the world has changed beyond what we ever could imagine. The Corona pandemic has affected every single one of us regardless of status and geographical location.
For vulnerable children the Coronavirus is not just a health crisis but it also puts them at risk of losing their caregiver, whether a parent or a relative. They are also the segment of the population most at risk as they often have underlying health conditions like HIV, TB or Malaria. For orphanages this is a time of increasing challenges too. Staff might get ill, or will be too afraid to go to work. Food and clean water shortages is a real threat and medical help will be even harder to come by for sick children. All this puts the children at increasing risk of neglect.
This is the time for us to act. Showing compassion is how we distinguish ourselves as we adapt to our changing world. In fact kindness has never been more important. Lets make sure that the most vulnerable children in our society today are not forgotten in this time of global crisis. Mother of Mercy Orphanage Centre

The work we carry out in Dar es Salaam is through connecting with existing Orphanage Centres and helping them where their needs are most pressing. Sometimes that means buying food or equipment, and sometimes its providing health care, education or building work. We were made aware of the plight of the Mother of Mercy orphanage centre after visiting them in April this year.
Mother of Mercy is based in a rural area, Madale, about an hours drive from the city of Dar. They care for approximately 70 children ranging from 2 to 18. The area they occupy now is very small and cramped, but they are in a fortunate position that a new centre was built for them in a different and much bigger location. However, their sponsor ran out of money and although the house itself is standing, no water, electricity, septic tank or even a kitchen are installed.
We really want to help them finish the building work and our aim in the next six months is to raise enough money to finish the work required. That way they can all move to this lovely and custom made centre which features three large dormitories, a large shower block and dining hall. They are also growing crops in the garden which they can use themselves or sell to others.

So much have been happening in the past few months. We had a visit from forex brokers Tickmill in the beginning of April who were in Dar es Salaam to hold a seminar. Their sizeable donation meant we could build a new roof at Umra orphanage, which has just been completed.
We have also spent some time at Almadina orphanage to try to improve the living conditions there. Our new recruit in Dar es Salaam, Cecilia is behind this initiative.
Lastly a new collection of beach bags and accessories were designed and produced, and we did a photoshoot on the beach for our new product website which is under construction. Soon we should be able to add a link on here to the site. We will keep you posted .

Tickmill Visit at Umra Orphanage
April 27, 2019
Forex brokers Tickmill came to visit Umra Orphanage Centre in the beginning of April. They were holding a seminar in Dar es Salaam and got in touch with us after finding our website online. Chris and Themis from Tickmill spent a very happy morning at the orphanage and came loaded with gifts for the children. It felt like christmas and the kids were so excited to be given new football kits, and other new clothing. As well as gifts Tickmill also brought sacks of grain and flour and beans so everyone were happy.
As part of the visit they donated money to the Trust to be used for a new roof at the orphanage. With the rain season about to set in this couldn't have come at a better time.
We are so grateful to Tickmill for their visit and their donation.
New Roof and Toilets at Umra Orphanage

Every time it rained the living quarters at Umra orphanage had problems with water coming through leaks in the roof and stagnating as there was no proper drainage. Stagnant water is the perfect breeding ground for the malaria mosquito and a real health risk for the children. With the money from Tickmill we decided to tackle this problem by building a new roof. The existing roof was dismantled and a new roof was put up in a matter of two weeks. Our trusted builder Perex and his team did a great job as always and finished it all by putting in new lighting, new fans and gave the area a new lick of paint.
In February we also put in a new toilet and shower area for the boys at the orphanage. There were problems with drainage and a leaking roof which has now been fixed and the boys are very happy with their new bathroom.

New Products Designed

We are so excited to have designed a new range of textile products for Spring Summer 2019. As before the bags are all made from African printed fabrics and handmade in Tanzania by our seamstress Viola. A new website is underway and you will be able to see the whole range of products there. 100% of the profit from the sale of the bags goes to the Bahati Trust. Once the website is up and running we will link it to this site. Please visit and get your pop of colour for your summer wardrobe and support the kids at the same time. We call it a win win.

Message from the Founder

In January this year we visited the Umra Orphanage Centre in Magomeni in Dar es Salaam. The vision of the centre is;
"to seek and bring together children living in difficult conditions, especially orphans and to provide them with care and guidance".
We found this to be a very well run orphanage which had caring and loving staff and management. The Bahati Trust will therefore be supporting this orphanage from now on. We have already built a new toilet and shower area for the boys and suffice to say all the kids are thrilled. We are looking forward to our continued work with this orphanage centre.
Buying essential equipment
February 6, 2019
We are always trying to help by purchasing items that are needed in the orphanage centres we support. At the end of last year we bought 8 new mattresses for the centre in Sinza Mori and we also bought a few for the kids at Umra this year.
When the Trust visit an orphanage centre we try to see if there is anything we can do which can make an immediate difference to the children. Giving a child a mattress is one of those things and it puts a smile on the face of both us and the kids.
Back to school
February 6, 2019
January is the start of the Tanzanian school year and it means getting the kids kitted out with everything they need to attend school or nursery. This year that meant buying school shoes, bags, socks and stationary for 120 children. Phew...
But we went to the market in Karioko in Dar es Salaam which is an adventure in itself, and got stuck into some haggling. Suffice to say we didn't manage this in one day but by the end it was deemed a successful mission.
Lots of happy children were ready to start a new school year and we were quite pleased that its a whole year until next time.
Bahati Bags now in stores

Some wonderful news from our African textile venture is that our bags and cushions are now selling in stores in the UK. The Yoga mat bags are being stocked at Yoga Hook yoga studio in Gerrards Cross Buckinghamshire. All our other items are in the Craft Coop in High Wycombe and Maidenhead. We were very excited to see our red Bahati beach bag displayed in the window at the Craft Coop in the Eden Centre in Wycombe.

Our textile venture
July 31, 2018
The Bahati Trust is now selling beach bags, yoga mat bags as well as cushions and cosmetics bags. So far this initiative has been very successful and we have enjoyed putting together the designs very much.
Our local Tanzanian lady Viola who works from a shop opposite the Ijango orphanage has been working incredibly hard to keep up with the orders. She and her assistants have produced up to 75 beach bags so far and plenty of cushions and yoga mat bags too. It's very rewarding to know we are supporting a local women and her small business venture. We are hoping we can expand this in future and support even more women by setting up our own workshop. In the short term we plan to help Viola buy a new sewing machine so that she can increase her production and in the process improve the finished product as well. Any donations to help Viola will be greatly appreciated.

Although the Bahati Trust has been up and running for a year and a half now, it is pretty much exactly a year ago that we were awarded official charity status. Since then we have increased the number of children we sponsor for school from 7 to 14 so a neat 100 percent. We are so happy with this achievement and every time we hear how the children are thriving we feel incredibly proud. We could not do this without the help of our incredibly generous and kind sponsors. We realise that everyone has financial commitments and that taking on additional commitments like sponsoring a child for school is a big ask. We are therefore so grateful to the wonderful people who help us help the children.
Our latest exciting news is that we have two volunteers coming to Dar es Salaam next week. Harry and Jasper (both 17) will be working with the children at nursery during the morning and then at the Ijango orphanage in the afternoon.
They will be living with an African family for the duration of their stay so will get a good understanding of the African way of life. If you (or your children) would like to become a Volunteer please contact the Trust for more information.

We are so happy to bring you the news that the Bahati Trust for Orphans in Tanzania has now been officially registered with the Charity Commission in England and Wales.
We have added our registration number at the top of the website.
The Bahati Trust opens its volunteer program
November, 2017
Some very exciting news this month is that the Bahati Trust is accepting volunteers from the UK to its care projects in Dar es Salaam. Our program will provide the volunteer with placement in a nursery school and an orphanage. We will organise a home stay with an African family who will provide you with room and full board.
Our people in Dar es Salaam will be on hand 24/7 to offer support should it be required.
The volunteer program will be suitable for anyone over the age of 18 and we encourage mature applicants as well as gap year students.

Shoe Drive a Great Success
August 3, 2017
I went back to Tanzania via Mozambique in July this year with two suitcases filled to the brim with donated school shoes.
Getting the shoes through customs - first in Mozambique and then in Tanzania was an adventure in itself which required a lot of patience and explaining. But thanks to friendly and helpful customs staff I managed to leave the airport in Dar es Salaam with the two suitcases still intact.
All the 70 plus children at Ijango Orphanage Centre was given a new pair of school shoes and still some went to the orphans at Almadina Orphanage Centre.
I spent such a happy afternoon with the kids at Ijango handing out shoes and we ended up with music and dancing.

Help Sponsor a Child

One of the most rewarding things we do is sponsoring children to give them a good education. At the moment friends of the Bahati Trust is sponsoring 5 children at nursery level, one at primary school and one doing vocational training.
We are proud to have achieved this in such a short space of time but there are many more that need your help. More than 40% of the population in Tanzania is under 14 years of age. The vulnerable children in orphanages face an uncertain future unless they can provide for themselves as they grow older. By giving them an education they have a chance of breaking the poverty cycle and have hope for the future.

New or Nearly New School Shoes Wanted
June 6, 2017
Sore feet, as we all know, can ruin your day, but the wrong shoes can be more than just uncomfortable. If your feet are still growing the wrong shoes can cause lifelong damage. Over time, foot deformities can develop along with knee and posture problems.
I am going back to Tanzania in July and I am filling two suitcases with school shoes and trainers for the children in the orphanages in Dar es Salaam. Email us if you want to help: contact@bathatitrust.com

The Toilet Block at Ijango Orphanage completed
June, 2017
Thanks to a generous donor we were able to build a new shower and toilet block for the children at Ijango orphanage in Dar es Salaam. The boys and girls now have separate areas for their toilet needs and some privacy when showering. We also added a hand washing station outside. Hopefully these little changes will do a lot to stop the spreading of disease.
A brick structure for the disposal of rubbish and washing lines were also put in at Ijango.
At the same time we disposed off hazardous play equipment and we look forward to replacing it with some new playground equipment in the future.

New Toilet and Shower Block at Inner-City Orphanage
March 29th, 2017
We are so excited to announce that the work on the new toilet and shower block at this orphanage in Dar es Salaam is underway. The work will double the footprint of the previous site and will bring much needed privacy for the older children. It will also improve on the sanitary conditions at the orphanage which should reduce illness and recurrent disease. To see the latest pictures from this project see the slideshow gallery above. We will update you with the latest pictures and stories as the work progresses.

Our application to become a registered charity is still with the Charity Commission, but we are hopeful that our application will be approved within the next month. Once we are a registered charity we can set up a donation platform where you will be able to make online donations. This will also enable us to claim Gift Aid. Donating through Gift Aid means we can claim an extra 25p for every £1 you give, and it won’t cost you any extra. We will keep you posted.

Thinking of donating to The Bahati Trust for Orphans in Tanzania? Check out our photos to see what we do. These pictures are from the first project we undertook at Ijango where we added 3 more cubicles for toilet and showering. Unfortunately it wasn't possible to go any bigger as the orphanage is not blessed with much free space. We also built a covered area for rubbish and got rid of dangerous play equipment.

About the Founder
Trude Johansen Gardner founded the Bahati Trust for Orphans in Tanzania in January 2017. Trude has spent considerable time in Dar es Salaam working in orphanages and seen first hand the terrible conditions in which the poor and underprivileged children live. Lack of proper sanitation causes untold misery and illness and is one of the problems she wants the Bahati Trust and its sponsors to tackle. Trude realises that a small change can make a big difference, whether it is improving on the facilities or educating the children about the spread of disease.
Trude is also passionate about improving education and thereby giving the children a chance to one day live independent lives. She firmly believes that by supporting the children’s education now they will be in a position to support themselves in the future.
Trude hopes that The Bahati Trust for Orphans in Tanzania will be a viable alternative for people who want to support a children's charity, but who have lost faith in other larger charities. There are too many question marks these days about whether donations reaches the people for which it is intended.
The Bahati trust guarantees that it will spend all its donations in Africa on the projects detailed above. None of it will go on administrative or other expenses. Trude will spend part of the year in Dar es Salaam to oversee the projects and while in the UK will liaise with her contacts in Tanzania.
As a sponsor you will receive regular updates on our work, and in the case of sponsoring a child, regular progress reports and pictures.
